Are you ready to learn to learn? We had a short conversation with Anima School Co-Founder and trainer Sezgin Öztürk about the production of animated films. "What are the job opportunities in this field? Can I start from scratch? How are films made? What are the opportunities abroad and domestically?" We answered questions such as: If you want to learn animation, make an animated film, work at Pixar, enter the animation industry and still have question marks in your mind, be sure to read our interview.
Remember; Our 3D Animated Film Making training, where you will have 9 months of training and 3 months of internship, will start on October 11th!
It depends on what kind of movie it's going to be made. Like whether you want to make a 2D or 3D movie. When you start a normal movie, the characters are designed, then modeling and textures are done during the modeling phase. Then the visual development department, which proceeds in the same way, starts to make the environment. When they are finished, asset side, rigs are made. Thus, everything is prepared on the asset side and now it goes to the production side. It's a separate job. What we call the production side is what kind of a movie it is, how many seconds it is, it is difficult to explain how the movies are made without mentioning them.
It also varies according to the project and scenario. There is a concept we call money shot, two sentences in the script can even turn into a three-month shot. There is a huge difference between the animation scenario and the normal scenario. This is usually the biggest problem. He is trying to write an animation script that writes a normal movie script. For example, let's say it says marching band enters. When the marching band enters, a million things come into play, like how many characters will there be. Therefore, when planning an animated film, it is necessary to look at the script and understand its stylization, that is, whether it will be two-dimensional, whether there is a two-dimensional stylization or 3D animation. After determining these, the location and the number of characters are factors in determining how many people will work in the film.
Of course. You just have to grow up like a generalist. First you have to understand this world, which is a long process. For example, there are those who work alone as a team and make festival films, especially in 3D. There are even those who have turned it into a profession, they only make animated films and visit festivals. There, concepts such as the quality of the animation and the duration are important, but usually there are animations of four to five minutes.
It takes a little time to learn and educate yourself, like a year or two. If general expertise is desired, if it is said that I will learn everything instead of focusing on a specific area, it is necessary to go a little further in everything. It also takes one year to specialize.
Speaking specifically about our Anima School education, job opportunities are not limited to movies. You can work in game companies, in the stock world, abroad, in the production world. Production is also divided into commercials and films. For example, there has been a great increase in Netflix productions recently, so there is a shortage of qualified personnel in the sector.
Of course you can. There is a man named Bobby Beck, one of the founders of Animation Mentor; “If it was that easy to work at Pixar, everybody would work at Pixar” he says. In other words, it is necessary to force a little work, to produce quality work, to force it. After specializing, why not, but these are always steps.
I give the following example to everyone: First, when you finish the learning phase, you can enter the TV series industry. The TV series industry is a good tool for accelerating and producing a different, high-quality work. But after specializing in the TV series industry for two or three years, you need to switch to commercials and movies to do something of quality. After doing something of high quality, you can head to places abroad like Pixar.
It is important to see every sector in terms of having an idea. You can specialize in a field, but rather than saying you don't know, it is the most logical to have an idea about how it is done and to try and specialize in a field.
There is something we call learning to learn. Being able to solve the problem quickly is another important issue. You are encountering a problem and this problem is constantly being renewed. Our industry is like that. Something doesn't come from what they know all the time. The main thing here is how you can solve that problem quickly. After developing it, programs are already a tool. Where you dominate, you can adapt to whatever pipeline you are working with with the appropriate program. If you go to Pixar, Pixar tells you its own program, shows you its own system and adapts it. Very big companies are like this anyway, they have their own systems. The main thing is to see the quality of the work you do. If you are animating, you need to have very good timing and very good animations, for example, you do not need to show renders. If you are applying to the model, you must have made a very good model topology, if you are applying to the render, you must have done the light and shadow everything very well in a single frame.
Definitely specializing in one area, having ideas from others. This is the great advantage of filmmaking education. They see everything, and they go to specialization at the internship stage. Looking at the current students, some of them liked modeling, some of them liked rendering and some of them liked animation. It is easier to specialize in specific fields and go abroad, and it is more difficult to go as a generalist. Since there is a logic of specialization abroad, whoever is an expert in the field does the job.
First for a new career. First of all, let me state what is our difference with universities, why we entered this field and what is our advantage. Since we come from the sector and our employees are people who work and do business actively in the sector, we see and understand the needs of the sector very clearly, and it is easier to turn this into a profession. If they want this as a job, there is something we always say; “Come to us if you want it as a job, not as a hobby”. We definitely recommend it to those who say, "I want to acquire this as a profession, I want to adapt myself to a 6 month or 1 year education, I have lost my mind and will change my career". When we look at the graduates, our network and wide environment allows us to do pinpoint placements. If you want to change careers, don't like your job or have a childhood dream, Anima School always has a place for you.
