Here’s everything you need to know about concept design…
I was born in Bursa in 1983. I graduated from the Animation Department of Dumlupınar University. I worked in the same department as a research assistant for 3 years. Then I came to Istanbul and started to work as a freelance artist. I am still working as a freelance concept artist, mattepainter and art director.
Creating the whole world or the atmosphere of a work, concept design is a very important part of any project. It is the mission of a concept designer to create the designs required for a project.
Watching plenty of quality productions (movies, series, etc.) will improve your visual memory and aesthetic threshold. Apart from that, I suggest you to observe works of current and veteran masters. If a movie gives you a visual pleasure when you watch it, you need to examine and assimilate why it is pleasing to your eyes.
From current works, Prometheus, Bladerunner, Love Death and Robots are the main ones.
Arif V 216, İkisi Bir Arada, Kaçamak, Solar Ocean Colonies (it hasn’t published yet) and the mobile game we are currently working on are the ones I have enjoyed most.
Concept design is gradually attracting more and more people in our country (with the development of the TV, film and game industry). If you want your ideas to be used in areas such as TV, games and cinema, concept design is one of the best jobs for painters and artists.
In order to be a concept designer, you have to apply and present your ideas properly. To do that, ability of drawing is important. If you want to be a concept designer, you may think to take a traditional drawing course first.
I grew up watching movies, playing video games and drawing. So my biggest dream was to work in movies and games. In a way, I believe that being a digital artist (creating concept design, mattepainting and illustration works) has always been the best choice for me.
