While 2019 was a very successful year, especially from Disney's point of view, we cannot say the same for other studios. Let's take a look at the animated movies together!
The two highest-grossing films of the year are also from Disney; The Lion King ($1.65 billion) and Toy Story 4 ($1.07 billion). The third is quite remarkable; A Chinese animated film produced by Beijing Enlight: Ne Zha ($729 million). However, another Disney movie, Frozen 2, which will be released in November, seems to dethrone Ne Zha already.
After these successful revenue figures, we can say that other studios were disappointed, with some exceptions. Dreamworks's How to Train Your Dragon: The Hidden World, Warner Bros.'s The Lego Movie 2: The Second Part, Sony's The Angry Birds Movie 2 and Illumination's The Secret Life of Pets 2 are, unfortunately, globally recognized by Disney. Didn't even get half of the proceeds.
Likewise, Paramount's Wonder Park, STX's Uglydolls, and Laika's Missing Link are also box office disappointments. Although the jury is still interested in the Dreamworks/Pearl Studio co-production Abominable, it did not achieve a record revenue. Just like in 2018's Smallfoot; The use of folkloric yeti-like creatures used in Missing Link and Abominable, the flimsy and repetitive stories no longer seem to satisfy audiences.
Then let's take a look at 2020; We will be watching 3 movies co-produced by Disney and Pixar and another 3 movies by Sony. Meanwhile, Netflix owns the second and third; Likewise, Apple is expected to release its first animation production. Let's take a look at the animated movies that are expected to be released in 2020 in the list below. Publication dates are subject to change.
